"Love Interruption" -- this is the first single from Jack White's first solo album, "Blunderbuss," released just a couple of months ago. And it's intense. And so is his pink--lipped duet partner.
Jack White is a different sort of presence entirely than the Lumineers. But in a way he has a lot in common with them: He's clearly got a lot of respect for the old-school -- like the Lumineers, he mines an existing genre -- but his sound is wholly his own. Distinctive. But fully rock'n'roll.
Is that a peacock pattern on his jacket?
White is el fuego on guitar, as almost everybody knows. He's going for broke in this performance.
It's got a White Stripey-vibe, this song, no? It's more reminiscent of that band than of the Raconteurs or Dead Weather, White's other recent bands.
Now we're rolling through another song off "Blunderbuss" -- this one's called "Freedom at 21," and it's nominated for Best Rock Song. Not surprising!
White is also up for Album of the Year and Best Rock Album.
"Freedom at 21" is gigantically percussive and totally funky. And here's that blistering guitar.
And he keeps on coming. Is there a single bigger titan of rock right now?
The first song in this medley was percussion-less, this one is gigantically percussive. Both, we can agree, were awesome.
Here it is, the Best New Artist announcement! Tough, tough competition this year.
That's a massive win for the Fun. boys.
Lena Dunham: big Fun. fan.
We're just coming off an important category, but there's still a couple more coming up. What are your predictions for Record of the Year and Album of the Year? Send them in, we're reading!
… And in the performance department, stay tuned for Hunter Hayes and Carrie Underwood. The stage is going country again. Grab your cowboy hats.
Back to Best New Artist: It was a really strong category, which might mean it's been a stronger than usual year for new music. Yes? No?
Also interesting is that the Best New Artist nominees all have such different sounds. Alabama Shakes and Fun. are opposite ends of the spectrum, musically, though they're both incredible.
